Q. What is Betapol®?

A. Betapol® is made of natural vegetable oils that have been specially combined to create a fat blend that mimics the structure of milk fat found in human breast milk. This fat blend can be added to infant formulas by infant formula manufacturers.

Q. Why should I buy an infant formula containing Betapol®?

A.

The fat structure in Betapol® matches the structure of breast milk fat as closely as possible. Scientific studies have shown that this gives the same kind of positive benefits to premature and term babies as breast milk does, such as increased fat absorption, increased calcium absorption, softer stools, and improved bone mineral density and bone mineral content.

Q. Which children is Betapol® intended for?

A. Betapol® has been developed for both starter and follow-on infant milk formulas. The starter formulas are for pre-term and A-term children (<6 months) and the follow-on formulas are for babies >6 months to 1 year.

Q. What is the principle that Betapol®’s fat blend with its high palmitic acid sn-2 nature, is based on?

A.

It is based on the unique fatty acid composition of human breast milk, the gold standard for infant formula.

Q. How can I see if an infant formula contains Betapol®?

A.

Although manufacturers must list all ingredients in an infant formula, some may only indicate the inclusion of Betapol® as ‘vegetable oil’ in the ingredients list. However an increasing number of formulas feature the Betapol® logo or state the benefits on the packaging. If you are unsure if a formula includes Betapol®, see if it is listed in the ‘Shopping for Betapol®’ section on this website, or contact the formula manufacturer.

A.

For a complete list of infant formula containing Betapol® and where to find them, please visit the Shopping for Betapol® section of this website.

Q. Is Betapol® effective?

A.

Several clinical studies have shown that, compared to conventional infant formulas, those containing Betapol® increase calcium absorption, fat absorption, and produces softer stools in babies.

Q. Is Betapol® safe?

A. Betapol® has been widely tested for safety by leading governmental agencies, and has long been approved for use in all EU member states, Canada and South Korea. In the US, the ingredient was given GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status in 2004. Betapol® was approved for use in China in 2008.

Q. Does the better fat absorption caused by Betapol® increase the chance of childhood obesity?

A.

Babies need every bit of the energy in human breast milk for healthy growth and development. The increased fat absorption caused by Betapol® simply brings bottle-fed babies closer to the ‘natural’ level of fat absorption that occurs in babies after drinking mother’s milk. Betapol®-fed babies are no more prone to childhood obesity than the average breast-fed baby.

Q. What are fatty acids?

A. Fatty acids are one of the body’s essential building blocks. They are made up of long carbon chains containing hydrogen and oxygen. Fatty acids can vary in the length of the chain, and the number and type of double bonds they have which make them either ‘saturated’ or ‘unsaturated’ fats.

Q. What are lipids?

A.

Lipids have been classically defined as substances that are generally insoluble in water, but soluble in organic non-polar solvents. Dietary fats are often referred to as lipids.

Q. What is the role of lipids in the body?

A.

Lipids fulfill a variety of important functions in the body. They can act as an energy source, a structural component or as a hormone-like entity.

Q. Who makes Betapol®?

A. IOI-Loders Croklaan, an internationally operating company in the field of specialty fats and lipids, produces Betapol® from pure vegetable oils using a patented process.
